Pakistan is becoming a more important diplomatic actor in the Middle East crisis. As tensions and fighting between the United States, Israel, and Iran shook the region, Islamabad pushed for negotiations and ceasefire efforts instead of further escalation.
US President Donald Trump recently confirmed that Pakistan had requested a pause in parts of Washington’s military operations linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis while talks with Iran continued. Pakistani officials also hosted diplomatic contacts connected to US-Iran negotiations and coordinated closely with Saudi Arabia during the crisis.
But while Pakistan gained visibility as a mediator, another shift was unfolding in parallel. Pakistan’s relationship with the United Arab Emirates is entering a more uncertain phase as regional priorities change. At the same time, Pakistan’s partnership with Saudi Arabia is becoming more institutionalized through expanding defense and economic cooperation.
