Dangerous Journeys
For many migrants, crossing borders illegally is their only option. Many have no legal papers and must rely on smugglers to cross into new countries. The journey is very risky.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), three out of every four migrants face violence or exploitation during their journey. Some are beaten, locked up, or extorted by smugglers or corrupt officials. Others are sexually assaulted or disappear along the way.
Despite the risks, they keep traveling, hoping for safety and opportunity.
A Regional Problem
Smuggling is not just a humanitarian issue. It thrives where corruption is high. It links to other crime like drug trafficking, money laundering, and corruption.
