Early on March 13, as fishing boats and cargo vessels moved through waters off Palawan and the Sulu Sea, debris from a Chinese Long March 8A rocket fell into areas within the Philippines.
The rocket, a medium-lift launch vehicle used for satellite missions, left behind fragments that did not simply disappear after impact. Some debris drifted through busy sea lanes or toward coastal areas, while other pieces may still contain toxic fuel, making them dangerous to approach.
Although authorities said no debris was expected to hit populated areas, the risks remain significant. Fishing boats, commercial vessels, and even low-flying aircraft operating in these waters could be exposed to potential danger.
