Europe’s Trade Fight with Israel Is More Than an Economic Warning

Europe has not broken ties with Israel, but it is questioning the Middle Eastern country's privileged access to the EU market.

Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia pushed to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the trade pact that has tied Israel to Europe since 2000. The move failed after Germany and Italy refused to support it, blocking the unanimity needed for passage.

Still, the warning is impossible to ignore. Israel’s biggest trade partner is openly debating whether the country should keep special access to Europe while facing mounting accusations over Gaza, the West Bank, and routine settler violence.

Europe’s Patience Is Wearing Thin

The countries backing suspension pointed to a growing list of red lines: Israel’s de facto annexation of the West Bank, rampant settler violence against Palestinians, the war in Gaza, and a new Israeli law that makes the death penalty a default punishment for Palestinians but not for Jewish Israelis.
