From April 24-29, more than 45 countries are meeting in Santa Marta, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, with a clear message: climate talks cannot avoid the role of fossil fuels.
This summit comes at a tense moment. Conflict in the Middle East is once again showing how risky it is for countries to depend on oil and gas imports. That makes this meeting about more than the environment. It is also about energy security and national independence.
This is not a typical climate conference. It brings together countries willing to say directly that cutting emissions means reducing the use of oil, gas, and coal. Co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands, the goal is to push beyond general promises and focus on real policy changes.
Countries attending include Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom, among others. Around 15 ministers are expected, along with senior officials in climate and energy policy.
