Public opinion in China is becoming noticeably more hawkish. A new study by the Carter Center, based on surveys of around 6,500 people across mainland China, shows declining trust in the outside world and rising support for a tougher national stance.
This shift comes as tensions grow between China and the United States, as well as its regional allies.
Chinese Public Now Sees the United States as a Strategic Threat
The biggest change is how Chinese citizens view Washington. Nearly three-quarters of respondents now see the United States as a threat to China’s national security.
About 62% support retaliating in the trade war, even if it comes at an economic cost. Only a minority prefer negotiation when it comes to technology restrictions.
This marks a clear shift. In the past, many Chinese saw cooperation with the United States as important for growth. Today, that view is fading. More people now support standing firm and dealing with Washington
