The United States has approved a massive $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan, one of the largest weapons packages Washington has ever authorized for the island. The decision, announced on December 17, is meant to strengthen Taiwan’s ability to defend itself as pressure from China continues to rise.
The sale includes advanced missile systems, drones, armored vehicles, and long-range artillery. Beijing has reacted sharply, warning that the move threatens regional stability and crosses what it calls a red line.
What the US Is Selling to Taiwan
At the center of the deal is the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), valued at about $4.05 billion. HIMARS is a truck-mounted rocket launcher known for speed and accuracy. It can fire precision rockets that hit targets up to 300 kilometers (185 miles) away. In simple terms, it allows Taiwan to strike military targets far from its shores if attacked.
