The Enduring Human and Economic Costs of the Russia-Ukraine War

The Russia-Ukraine war shows how long and far-reaching the costs of conflict can be. It is not just bombs and bullets. War destroys families, communities, and economies. The fighting that began in 2014 escalated into a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, marking the deadliest war in Europe since World War II. Today, its effects touch every part of Ukrainian life and ripple across Europe and the world.

 

Lives Shattered and Futures Stolen  

The human cost of the Russia Ukraine war is devasting. Since Russia's invasion four years ago, between 100,000 and 140,000 Ukrainians have been killed, according to estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Many of those killed left behind families. Today, about 59,000 Ukrainian children live without their biological parents.
