The Philippines and Canada are joining forces to beef up military ties as tensions with China heat up in the South China Sea.
On November 2, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty signed a new agreement in Manila. It allows troops from both countries to train together, swap knowledge, and coordinate on disasters and cybersecurity. The deal is similar to what the Philippines already has with the US, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
What This Means
Canada’s minister says the deal is about training, exchanges, and sharing information to make both countries stronger. Teodoro says it helps protect international rules in the region, which he says China is threatening. He also criticized China’s new “nature reserve” near Scarborough Shoal, which the Philippines says is its territory.

China has been clashing with the Philippines in the South China Sea for years.
