How a Piece of Jewelry Reignited a Caribbean Border Dispute

A small gold pin has pulled Venezuela and Guyana’s border dispute back into the center of Caribbean diplomacy.

Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez has been wearing a brooch shaped like the country’s official map, including the Essequibo—the resource-rich region controlled by Guyana but claimed by Caracas. As she tours Caribbean capitals to rebuild Venezuela’s diplomatic ties, the symbol has been interpreted as a direct provocation.

A Small Pin With a Big Territorial Claim

The Essequibo dispute dates back more than a century and is now before the International Court of Justice. Hearings next week will examine Guyana’s case to uphold the 1899 ruling that fixed the border.

That timing makes the gesture more than symbolic. Guyana argues Venezuela is using regional platforms to reinforce a claim already under legal review.
