On January 21, Bangsamoro officials marked the seventh anniversary of the region’s autonomy. Two days later, on Friday, January 23, 2026, four Filipino soldiers were killed and another wounded in an ambush in Munai, Lanao del Norte. The timing was difficult to ignore.
