Malaysia has achieved a major milestone in its fight against the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. According to a new Mutual Evaluation Report released on December 11, between 2019 and February 2025, the Malaysian government recovered $9.5 billion in assets, with 75 percent of these directly linked to the 1MDB case.
The 1MDB scandal, which rocked Malaysia for almost a decade, involved the theft of $4.5 billion from a government-owned investment fund. High-profile figures, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak and financier Jho Low, were implicated in a global money laundering scheme that funneled stolen funds into luxury items, films, real estate, and even Hollywood films.
