Southeast Asia’s AI Movement: ASEAN Seeks Control Before Others Step In

At the 6th ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi, held January 12-16 under the theme “Adaptive ASEAN: From Connectivity to Connected Intelligence,” Southeast Asian leaders discussed how artificial intelligence could reshape economies, societies, and governance across the region. With major powers like the US and China racing to dominate AI technology, ASEAN is aiming to craft its own rules and strategies, ensuring Southeast Asia isn’t left behind in the global AI race.

 

Acting Before AI Gets Out of Control

ASEAN is trying to prevent a fragmented patchwork of AI rules by setting up a regional AI Safety Network Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur, a move approved at the bloc’s latest leaders’ summit in 2025.
