Philippine Senator Arrested in Flood Control Corruption Case

The Philippines flood control corruption controversy is continuing to unfold in real-time. On May 27, Senator Jinggoy Estrada was charged in a corruption case linked to the projects.

 

Anti-graft prosecutors accuse Estrada of benefiting from illegal budget insertions that allegedly diverted public funds meant for flood protection. According to investigators, the senator received more than 570 million pesos in illegal payments linked to flood control projects funded in 2025.

 

The wider investigation has uncovered even larger sums, with the Department of Justice reporting in March that it had recovered 611 million pesos in cash and assets from state witnesses connected to the alleged scheme.

 

Flood Control Funds Under Scrutiny  

The current investigation is part of a wider probe into so-called "ghost projects" that were exposed last year. Anger ripped through the Philippines when the scheme surfaced, even kicking off large protests.
