Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has claimed victory in the country’s general election held on February 8, 2026. His conservative Bhumjaithai Party is on track to win at least 194 of the 500 seats in parliament, putting him in a strong position to remain in power despite falling short of an outright majority.
Anutin thanked voters after early results were confirmed, saying the outcome “belongs to all Thais, no matter whether you voted for us or not.” The election was closely watched as a test of Thailand’s political direction after years of instability and tension between reformist movements and traditional power centers.
While Bhumjaithai led the race, the progressive People’s Party conceded defeat and confirmed it would sit in opposition. The long-dominant Pheu Thai Party, linked to the Shinawatra family, fell to third place with just 77 seats, a sharp decline from previous elections and a sign of shifting voter
