Malaysia and Indonesia made history this weekend, becoming the first nations to block Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot tied to Elon Musk and his company xAI. Leaders say the tool was used to create fake sexual images, including of children.
Officials say the problem grew fast. Users could turn real photos into explicit pictures in seconds. The images then spread like wildfire across social media. No existing safety tools could stop the harm.
Indonesia blocked Grok on Saturday, January 10, with Malaysia following suit on Sunday, January 11. Both governments say the move is temporary but will last until stronger safeguards can be put in place.

"The government sees non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity and the safety of citizens in the digital space," said Indonesia's Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid in a statement.
